    An oscillating engine isn't terribly efficient but steam can be used to provide some serious power. My two cylinder engine...

    can easily drive a generator and it's only single acting. Double acting engines can put out serious power. Compare the size of the (double-acting) engines on a steam locomotive to the size of the train the engine can pull.

    All those steam engine toy sets like the ones you show and others made by Wilesco employed small oscillator engines. Those engines are the simplest and cheapest to build. With that in mind, I think the one shown in the OP would also drive any of those entertainment accessories.
