I used to have a 74 canvas top with the 4.2 inline 6 I'd take it over either of those

I owned a 70 FJ55 with the six in it. The jack handle was also a hand crank to start it.

The 74 version much better suited to real 4 x 4 territory in Africa, as if something breaks, field repairs will be much simpler.

I prefer the looks of the older one. The new one reminds me of a Range Rover that wealthy people buy and never take off road.

I know which one I can work on myself - even on the side of the road for basic repairs.

I've repowered 5 Land Cruisers with small block Chevys. Why? For the money and that's what the client wanted...

I repowered mine with a 350 Chevy after a trip towing my travel trailer from Santa Rosa to Albuquerque against a headwind and was over halfway there before I got it over 35. Also picked up 2 miles top the gallon with the changeover. The old six was wearing out anyway having blown an oil filter line in the boondocks and limping in jury rigged.
