I made a sifter like this a couple of years ago to fit the top of a plastic storage box. The only difference was I bolted a sewing machine motor to the frame as a shaker. To produce the shaking action, I press fit a circular piece of 3/4 inch plywood with a hole drilled off center on the motor shaft and reinstalled the small pulley originally on the shaft as a retainer. It worked really well! The foot pedal allowed me to vary the amount of vibration as needed.
