I really think that grinders such as these need to come with a warning to put forth all effort to protect the ways on the lathe, milling machine that is being used as an X,Y, movement. The stone bits and so forth will get into the ways and wear out the ways quicker especially if the felt protecting the ways is worn out. Call me old fashion if you want to but I see this as a serious problem

I was also going to ask if it won't wear parts of the lathe prematurely.

NOT a good idea to be grinding any where near a lathe or mill!
